San Pietro and Sant'Antioco are two islands off the coast of Sardinia, closer to Tunisia than to the Italian mainland. This geographical isolation contributes to the unique identity of their inhabitants, who call themselves Tabarchini. They feel neither fully Sardinian nor fully Italian. Their remoteness has allowed them to preserve a distinctive language, Tabarchino, an archaic Ligurian dialect enriched with numerous Arabic loanwords. Martin Hanni recently visited these fascinating islands.
