Zahre – A German Language Enclave in the Carnic Alps

Zahre – A German Language Enclave in the Carnic Alps

Sauris/Zahre effectively consists of two villages: Sauris di Sotto/Unterzahre and Sauris di Sopra/Oberzahre. These two villages form the German language enclave in north eastern Italy.

It is not entirely clear when the German speakers began to settle in Zahre. The reason for this is that a fire, two centuries ago, destroyed some irreplaceable documents. The minet team set out to investigate this minority and their language.

minet broadcast: 30.04.2008
